The evolution of biotechnology

The evolution of biotechnology

It has been more than 30 years, biotechnology impacting science, law, health, and environment and many other sectors dramatically. In a short time span, you would be shocked to know that more than 300 biotechnology products have been approved and used widely.

The overall sales of these products were calculated more than $180 billion in the year 2014. This amount is good for sustaining and managing big life science sector that includes more than 5000 biotech companies worldwide.

Biotechnology is progressing rapidly and it affects healthcare sector in four different ways – innovation in medical science, government activities or support, business sector and development, healthcare facilities.

The future growth of biotechnology is certain as medical science is improving and progressing almost every day, government is offering incentives offers for medical sector rather it is public or private, Business leads to cost effective medical solutions, and healthcare provider promising better quality of care in coming years.

Student workers at Dongguan factory were under-age, state media claim

Student workers at Dongguan factory were under-age, state media claim
The electronics factory located in Dongguan employed about two hundred minor laborers and those young individuals were rescued and reportedly sent on their designated home following a revelation by media in the region.
Based on Guangzhou Daily, they had eleven working hours and each hour costs them 8.50 yuan (HK$10.67) and they used illegal records in order to grab the job.
According to newspaper reports, the one hundred ninety two “student workers” from Dongguan Gang Gu Electronic were able to go home through buses and were able to return in their communities, commonly in Hunan and Guangxi provinces.
The organizations supporting the rights of workers said that child labor is very rampant in the area and feature the issue to substandard failure at the level of city government.
The head of Guangdong Panyu Migrant Worker Centre in Guangzhou, Zeng Feiyang said that a factory that employs minor laborers must give them a salary as a charge amounting to 5,000 yuan in every person. However, there is no truth that these factories are charged. Rather, they were condemned by officers, relatively because there so many who are involved in the case.
The representative of Hong Kong-based China Labour Bulletin, Geoffrey Crothall, approved on this. He said that the city government is not driven sending groups for investigation in the factories until media reporters perform the mentioned secret investigations.
Dr Liu Kaiming, chairman of the Shenzhen-based Institute of Contemporary Observation also added that most of the junior graduates in secondary school living in rural areas decide to find jobs instead of studying in school.

Fight for Transgender Rights in India

The last few decades has seen a rise in fights and protests by third genders for equality and recognition in society. Third genders are those who are separated as other gender men and women either by the society or themselves. According to present statement of Supreme Court, the term is used for transgender and transsexual people who contradict with their sex orientation. It is like being a woman in man’s body and vice versa.   They generally worship Bahuchara Mata or Shiv as some stories are present of Bahuchara Mata being a transgender.

India has the largest number of third gender in entire globe; but the burning souls are at every corner of the world. More than 70% of third gender do begging and sex work for survival.  It is not that they are not willing to go for a normal job, but they are denied to be offered normal jobs.  Many campaigns are done by several organizations to help them, but in spite of that, very less is visible in favor of the third gender in India.  They are still struggling to get a proper recognition in the society and enjoy the rights which a normal citizen enjoys.

Many governments of different countries have passed the identity act such as Argentina and Pakistan; in India it has been really tough for these people as they are treated as invisibles without any rights in social life.

Education is also a major concern for them as they are not easily accepted by schools and colleges though they have right to get education. Dropping out of third gender children has increased tremendously due to insecurities of others and embarrassing situations faced by transgender.

Though some privileges have been provided by the Supreme Court like voting rights and education rights, but still a lot needs to be done to make them feel comfortable in the society.

Gene therapy and medicine

Gene therapy and medicine

Are you familiar with the concept of gene therapy? Gene therapy is a treatment of medical condition by altering, supplementing or replacing genes that are infected or absent and generally responsible for disease. For gene therapy, DNA or even genetic material can be used as medicine. There are approximate 100,000 to 150,000 genes inside human body. During this treatment, infected gene is identified and treated properly with DNA codes.

image003

Gene therapy can be used in variety of ways – let us see how??

  • It can be used to replace absent or infected genes that we have discussed already.
  • It can destruct genes responsible to speed up growth of cancer cells
  • It can be used as vaccination to treat severe infection inside human
  • Promotes the growth of new tissues that have been destroyed due to aging or other health problems
  • It also helps in repairing damages tissues so you can look younger even after a certain age.

Medical advancements have lots of surprises in store – The future starts here with gene therapy!!!

Anabolic steroids a serious global health problem

Anabolic steroids a serious global health problem
For many years, human are dependent on different kinds of drugs or substances that can increase their performance. As an example, it has been recommended that the ancient Greeks use a liquid with healing or magical properties in order to enhance their performance.
In this present day, these substances vary from soft to hard substances. Soft or legal substances are energy drinks while hard substances are steroids, amphetamines and some natural procedures like blood drug to enhance the red blood cells.
Anabolic steroids are very well-known in the world of athletic as a substance that enhance the performance of the user. However, more the past decades, they have been used for aesthetic. It was discovered in a new study from Annals of Epidemiology that recommended that that 3.3% of the population around the globe have consumed steroids at least one and most of them were men.
It was also found that the consumption of anabolic steroids is currently a critical public health issue in the world. Not limited to athletes, the widespread of anabolic steroids use results millions of individuals around the globe are using anabolic steroids to enhance their physical skill and aspect.

Air Quality Measurement Network with Big Data Technology

Air Quality Measurement Network with Big Data Technology

These days, the problem of air pollution is getting serious throughout the whole world. Also, specifically, the problem of fine dust is the most recent and radical problem to South Korea, China, Germany, and other countries. Many countries are developing their own technology and make many efforts to solve these serious problems. Germany, for example, developed the fine dust program by using big data to provide information about fine dust and air quality.
In Germany, more than three-quarters of the population lives in cities. For their health, knowing about air quality is an important factor. However, the government doesn’t provide sufficient information to citizens about each day’s air quality and seriousness of air pollution. To solve this problem, KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) researchers began the project called “SmartAQnet (Smart Air Quality Network)”. SmartAQnet is aimed at developing a measurement network in the model region Augsburg that captures all currently available aerosol and gas measurement data. Also, to solve the problem of cost, the members are developing new low-cost measurement technology so that all of the citizens are available to get that information. Because the major purpose of this program is to provide sufficient information to many people, it can freely and flexibly be used for the development of science, society, and individuals.
However, at first, providing useful information with low cost was one of the biggest challenges they met. To solve this problem, Matthias Budde, head of the project and computer scientist at the Chair for Pervasive Computing System (PCS), innovatively combined the study of big data and light technology. Budde developed a plug-in sensor and an app to turn the camera of a smartphone into a fine dust detector. The flash of the smartphone emits light into the measurement area and this light is scattered by the fine dust. Budde used the camera to captures the measurement result in the form of a picture. From this picture, the dust concentration can be calculated. This simple technology for measurement came out from Buddle’s idea and this became a mainstream of the project. Even though this non-expert simple technology can lower the preciseness of measurement, this drawback can be covered by the huge advantage that the entire citizen can access this information easily.
SmartAQnet is developing an innovative project that the principle of big data, environmental science, and physics are combined in one technology. Many critics believe that this technology has infinitive development possibility that can be the key to solving the air pollution problem. By this technology, the citizens not only are provided information about air quality and dust but also are alerted the seriousness of air pollution so that they can be evoked to make some efforts by themselves.

Challenges and Solutions in Indian Higher Education

The large quantity of young individuals in India might be its greatest strength but the hindrance goes along with it. Based on the information, very few young children can afford to step to college. The nation is experiencing a very challenging situation when it comes to creating a quality higher education to all young people in India.

As an example, India’s Gross Enrolment Ratios in the year 2010 is very low compared to other Asian countries. As for the global list of top 200 universities released last year 2013, India failed to make it on the list.

image003

In order to understand this struggle, the Diplomat reached out to the founding dean of Indian School of Business, Pramath Raj Sinha. Sinha is a commited member of an association composed of entrepreneurs and business people who started the liberal arts educational institution called Ashoka University that begun accepting admission last year.

By the help of Sinha’sexperiences in the area of higher education, he can share his knowledge about success, in general. He shares some point of views related in higher education.

The problem arises wherein the high school educational system gets greater in number which prevents the students to continue their college. This kind of heavy inconsistency is one of the challenges of Indian higher education.

The private sector has something to do with this supply and demand issue about higher education in India and even those business-minded people contributes in building private colleges and universities. These people generously provide services for the benefit of many students just like IT, BPO and services industry.

Finally, the option to build foreign universities in India could make a progress toward something and it could take a long process and the financial stability should be considered. After all, there is no quicker way to arrange this challenge about higher education and India should be the one to find an effective solution.
