Fight for Transgender Rights in India

The last few decades has seen a rise in fights and protests by third genders for equality and recognition in society. Third genders are those who are separated as other gender men and women either by the society or themselves. According to present statement of Supreme Court, the term is used for transgender and transsexual people who contradict with their sex orientation. It is like being a woman in man’s body and vice versa.   They generally worship Bahuchara Mata or Shiv as some stories are present of Bahuchara Mata being a transgender.

India has the largest number of third gender in entire globe; but the burning souls are at every corner of the world. More than 70% of third gender do begging and sex work for survival.  It is not that they are not willing to go for a normal job, but they are denied to be offered normal jobs.  Many campaigns are done by several organizations to help them, but in spite of that, very less is visible in favor of the third gender in India.  They are still struggling to get a proper recognition in the society and enjoy the rights which a normal citizen enjoys.

Many governments of different countries have passed the identity act such as Argentina and Pakistan; in India it has been really tough for these people as they are treated as invisibles without any rights in social life.

Education is also a major concern for them as they are not easily accepted by schools and colleges though they have right to get education. Dropping out of third gender children has increased tremendously due to insecurities of others and embarrassing situations faced by transgender.

Though some privileges have been provided by the Supreme Court like voting rights and education rights, but still a lot needs to be done to make them feel comfortable in the society.
